Spas
At the Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburger Forest)
and the Wiehengebirge, there are many spas, which have salines and mineral hotsprings.
Well-known places are called Bad Meinberg, Bad Salzuflen, Bad Oeynhausen, Bad Iburg and Bad Driburg. In our country every physician or doctor and sick knows which diseases can be cured there. Some rural (rustic) spas, which are very little and only
known by insiders, are for example Bad Seebruch and Bad Senkelteich.
Blomberg
Blomberg is one of the smallest towns in Lippe,
but not less interesting than some bigger towns in the region. The whole town is situated on
a ridge with a castle on the top. Today it's used as a hotel and restaurant. The city-hall
and some private-houses represent the style of the Weserrenaissance. Worth seeing are the
late Middle-Age tower of the city wall and the former Augustine-monastery-church (1460-1473 ),
which have a very interesting grave of the founder Earl Bernhard VII of
Lippe. The relief on the gothic grave shows the church short time after its
finish. In the 90s the synagogue of Blomberg was discovered again and restored. It's a
nearly 2000-year-old framework-building.
Pickert
The region of the Teutoburger Wald has
only a few really characteristic things to offer as traditional cuisine. The best known
food would be the "Lippische Pickert", similar to a pizza, to a
"poor-person-meal". It is a special potato-pancake consisting of flour (
alternatively buck wheat flour), rubbed potatoes, eggs, salt and yeast, which is stirred in
warm milk before. It has a thickness of one centimeter and is served with butter and
"Lippish liver sausage" (variant for men) or butter and turnip-tops (this variant is prefered
by the women).
Detmold
The capital town of the country Lippe developed
above all in the 16th also in the 18th and 19th century. The castle takes a quarter of the
old town - area and was constructed in the style of Weser-Renaissance. It is the youngest
work of the architect Jörg Unkair, who began his career in Schloß Neuhaus
and who was the first architect of Renaissance in Germany (1547 - 1557). As the Ex -
country capital, Detmold has a lot of institutions which other bigger countries never
have, like a country library with excellent collections, the country museum and country
theatre and above all the biggest German Open Air Museum (Westfälisches Freilichtmuseum).
A musical version of the war of 1870 - 1871 is provided by the song " Lippe
Detmold, a wonderful city and a soldier therein", which is still sung today as a
popular song. Nearby are the Externsteine, the Herrmannsdenkmal, the Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen
and the Adlerwarte Berlebeck
Lippe
River which has its spring on the edge of the
Teutoburger Forest and flows into the Rhine westwards. A family of noble peers took
the name of a small territory lying on the banks of the river Lippe. This family came into
the Eastern part of the Teutoburg Forest during the twelfth century. Here the family
established a new reign which later became an Earldom and later a Duchy, called the
Duchy of Lippe. The intelligent politics of the Duke of Lippe had the consequence that
Lippe stayed independent under Napoleon in contrast to other Dukedoms like Hessen,
survived the Vienna Congress without damages, was not swallowed by Prussia (in contrast to
i.e. Lower Saxony) and did not become a part of a federal state of Germany before 1947.
Clever negotiations lead to the fact that Lippe became a part of the German federal state
NRW(Northrhine-Westfalia, Nordrhein-Westfalen), the seal of which is equipped with the
symbol of Lippe - the red rose. Lippe has taken much advantage of this fact, because it
gets a lot of assistance from the NRW-government.
